Thursday 23rd September

Last Thursday my group consisting of Holly, Alana, Caitlin and myself went to film clips for our short example video. The purpose of this video is to give us an opportunity to get to grips with the new equipment, try everything out and also use editing effectively.
We spent about 40 minutes filming then returned to the Media suite to begin editing. Everything went fine to begin with then we realised we had one scene that was out on sync, which would mean we would have to re-record the majority of our work to make everything flow and fit together. We then quickly re-recorded our clips and re-uploaded them by which point the lesson had ended and we had to leave. We plan to begin editing in tomorrows lesson.
We used the video cameras and tripods in Thursdays lessons which was fun and made me realise how much sturdier and easy filming can be when using one. We tried to include as many different shots as we could and tried to make the plot of our short video quite funny and original.

We also started to use iMovie. I usually use Windows Movie Maker if I am editing any video clips but do have previous, and quite limited, experience with iMovie. It was interesting learning how to use the new software although it is a bit strange trying to get to grips with it. I would, however, like to learn how to use iMovie more comfortably over the next couple of lessons as I really like Macs.
That's about it for Thursday's lesson I do believe... it was a shame we had some problems when filming but these things happen sometimes. I'm really looking forward to seeing my groups final video.

Terminology.

Composition: this is the placement of visual elements (objects). Objects are often placed in a certain way for a certain effect. For example:
The main elements of this photo are the shark and the girl. The rule of thirds has been used in this image as the girl is in the bottom left third, making her appear small and vulnerable. The shark is placed slightly behind the girl and takes up the majority of the rest of the image to show how large and powerful it is. It has been made even bigger by having its mouth open; this shows he is going to attack and cause harm. The title is in bold and placed in the bottom right third; this demonstrates how the title is important but not as important as the shark.
It can also be the creation of a piece of music.

Editing: this is the process of selecting and preparing images, text, video and audio and putting them all together; correcting them; modifying them and creating a final piece that is presentable to an audience. Editing in terms of film is often the preparation of film and something audio files and placing them together. Audio can add to the tension of the actions in the film. Editing is an effective process in making something look professional and presentable.

Sound: this is a travelling wave that can be heard by humans and animals. Sound in the terms of media is often in the form of audio files which can be used in the editing process to add tension or emotion to a scene. Certain instruments are used to create these effects, string instruments can be used to make a scene feel sad or scary. Drums are often used to add tension and drama. Sound can create a mood in a scene.

Diegetic sound
is that of the sound that is present on screen that has not been added in. For example, if you were at the actual scene you would be able to hear that sound (e.g. a door closing, a cough). However, non-diegetic sound is that of the sound that is present on screen that had been added in. For example, a violin playing dramatic music would be added in after the scene was recorded, there would not be someone playing the dramatic music whilst filming was taking place.

These three can all interlink in a scene where, for example, a shark could be going in to attack someone. The composition could be the shark behind the unsuspecting victim, the sound could be loud and adding suspense and drama (a typical instrument could be a string instrument or keyboard) and they could be edited to fit together to make the scene more effective.

An Introduction To Hannah Winter...

Hello!
I'm Hannah Winter but I feel like I'm using my full name way too much so yes, I'm Hannah. I'm 16 and I'm currently a student at Reepham College after making the choice to leave my old High School. At Reepham I study:
Photography, Psychology, English Literature and Media Studies. I'm really interested in all of these subjects and hope they could all lead to possible career paths in the future. I'd ideally like a career in the media so thought Media Studies would be a good place to start.
This blog is for my media studies coursework, research and just generally for displaying my media work. I hope it will be interesting and mainly that you enjoy reading it... :)

Anyway, that's all for now...

Hannah :D
